Compost Heaps

In these eco-friendly times, composting has had somewhat of a revival. Separating compostable food waste from other forms of rubbish is high on the governments list of green priorities.

Food waste rots down to produce methane and other gasses, and biodegrades quickly. You can now often find brown food waste boxes on driveways to separate out this rubbish.

A good portion of this waste can probably be put on your home compost heap. Anything like vegetable peelings or even eggshells make excellent composting material. So rather than add these to the waste bin, why not create your own compost heap and use the resulting compost on your garden?

Compost heaps can be either made from a few pieces of old wood, or bought cheaply on line. Plastic composting tubs are a good way to start as they contain the material nicely and create a good working temperature to speed up the process.

If you don't want to wait as long for your finished compost, there are various additives available to get the composting process started and help it on it's way. Grass cuttings, prunings and garden waste as well as food waste can be added and you will find it all compacts down quickly to give you an excellent home grown supply of compost for your flower or vegetable beds.
